The University of Pittsburgh’s history dates back to 1787 when the Pittsburgh Academy was founded as a school for frontier children. The academy was established by Hugh Henry Brackenridge, a lawyer, and writer who believed that education was essential for the development of the young United States.

In 1819, the Pittsburgh Academy has renamed the Western University of Pennsylvania. The university continued to grow and expand its programs over the next century, adding new departments and schools, including a law school, a medical school, and a school of engineering.

In 1908, the university moved to its current location in the Oakland neighborhood of Pittsburgh, where it began to take on its current identity as a research university.
